August 15, 1973 (Past Time)
I figure I should start my own travel journal. Iâll have a Future Girl too one day. JeezâI canât even imagine that right now. How can I think about my future at all when my past is so completely screwed up? My mom is a big fat liar. My dad isnât my dad. And Mary, my grandmother, is starting to forget who I am thanks to this awesome disease called Alzheimerâs that I really hope doesnât exist anymore by the time you read this. So, yeah. Awesome.
Tonight is probably the main reason I have this opening to 1973. Iâm going to meet Jonah Wolff. In case music is completely changed by the time you read this, Jonah Wolff is a really famous, really talented rock star. He died in the 1990s, but before that he had albums that went triple platinum and he went on world tours and had thousands upon thousands of fans who would scream his name and burst into tears around him. He influenced a lot of the bands that I love. Before this week, Jonah Wolff was just this famous person that died. Now, heâs my whole world. Heâs my real father.
What kills me is Iâm not going to get any answers from him. I mean, Iâll meet him and maybe get an idea of what kind of person he is, but itâs not like I can ask him the questions that are really important right now. Like, why was he such a deadbeat dad that I didnât even know we were related? Did he even know I existed? Why didnât my mom ever tell me about her affair with one of the most famous people on earth? See, I canât ask him any of that because none of it has happened yet. I donât even know if heâs met my mother. So, while Iâm really nervous and excited about tonight, Iâm already totally disappointed. No matter what happens, Iâll never know the real truth. I wonât know if he ever thought of me. Ever loved me.
What will the next days bring? I donât know. Iâve always been a planner. Iâve always been a rule follower. But this time, screw it. Iâm just going to sing with my eyes closed and see what happens. You know what I mean? Until next time, Future Girl!
